A
trip to the Emergency Department
(ED) usually comes as a surprise.
From the moment you walk through
the door, Fayette County Memorial
Hospital (FCMH) is ready to provide
you with the most e cient and best
care right here where you live.
Like many other EDs, patients
are seen in our ED on a rst come-
rst served basis or based on the
seriousness of their illness or injury.
Here’s what you can expect when
you come to our ED:
w
Triage.
As soon as you walk
through the door, you are immediately
seen by a triage nurse. He or she will
talk to you about your illness or
injury, take your vital signs, and
gather other important information
that will allow the sta to treat you
properly. If your condition is not
life-threatening and the ED is full,
you may be asked to have a seat in
the waiting room until a bed is
empty. At FCMH, a nurse is
routinely stationed in the triage
area during certain hours to help
speed up the treatment process
so you aren’t waiting for a long
period of time to be
seen by a provider. At
some point during
your visit to the ED, a
patient registrar will
also come to your
bedside to register
you into our electronic
system.
w
Treatment.
A physician or
physician assistant will do a
physical exam and may order tests,
such as x-rays, an electrocardiogram,
or blood or urine samples. In an
emergency, every second counts.
at’s why we are proud to have
Telemedicine. is innovative
system allows us to work with
bigger hospitals like e Ohio State
University Wexner Medical Center
to provide the highest quality of
care to our patients. Similar to the
way Skype and FaceTime
give you a live interaction
with another person,
Telemedicine provides a
real-time consultation
using video and web-
based so ware between
our physicians and e Ohio State
University specialists. As of now,
Telemedicine is o ered for stroke
and burn treatment. When a patient
arrives at the ED with strokelike
symptoms, FCMH sta initiate
an alert and are immediately
connected with e Ohio State
University Wexner Medical Center’s
stroke physicians. For burn patients,
PATIENT CARE
e Ohio State University’s burn
experts are connected to us
immediately to assess the severity
of the burn.
“Direct specialty consults with
actually seeing and talking with the
patient on-site is a new frontier in
quality care,” says James McWeeney,
MD, FCMH ED Medical Director.
“A picture is truly worth a thousand
words.”
Whether you are treated in our
ED for a minor or major illness
or injury, you will receive written
instructions about how to care
for your illness or injury. e
instructions will also tell you what
to do if it gets worse and whether
or not you should follow up with
your primary care or specialty
physician. You may also get a
prescription.
