A JOURNAL DE VOT ED TO HEALTHFUL L I V I NG
WI NT ER 2014
WHEN
you’re in need of
immediate medical care, you o en go
to the hospital emergency department
(ED). But that isn’t always the best
choice. Minor illnesses and injuries
can usually be taken care of more
quickly—and at a lower cost—at an
urgent care/same-day care clinic.
So how do you determine if your
illness or injury needs to be treated at
the ED or at an urgent care/same-day
care clinic? While the answer is not
always simple, knowing the di erence
between emergency care and urgent
care/same-day care is important and
may assist you in making the decision.
Emergency department
Emergency departments provide
fast, lifesaving care for illnesses
and injuries such as chest pain,
compound fractures, confusion,
seizures, stroke, shortness of breath
or any other major injury. If in
doubt about where you should seek
treatment, go to the nearest ED.
Urgent care/
same-day care clinic
Urgent care/same-day care clinics
are a great option for minor illnesses
or injuries that need to be treated
right away but don’t appear to pose a
serious health risk. Some symptoms
that can be treated at an urgent
care/same-day care clinic include
allergies, minor asthma attacks,
coughs, ear infections, sore throats,
and sprains and strains. If you need
more help than urgent care/same-
day care can provide, you will be sent
or transported to a hospital ED.
At Fayette County Memorial
Hospital, our Urgent Care/Same-
Day Care Clinic o ers quality health
care to all ages without the hassle
